Wanna Get To Know Me?

At the beginning of the semester when we were learning about blogs, Alec said that a posting option could be one of those email questionaires that we frequently receive. I just got one yesterday and although in the past I would have deleted it, verifying the statement that "Lisa will be the least likely to respond to this email", I've actually decided to answer this one. Who knows, it could be fun...

  1. What time did you get up this morning? 7:00am...which was really hard because we've been on vacation for a week!
  2. Diamonds or pearls? Diamonds
  3. What was the last film you watched? Dodgeball, which was quite a waste of time but I love Ben Stiller so I thought I'd give it a shot
  4. What is your favourite T.V. show? The OC...I'm admitting that I love those teenage dramas
  5. What did you have for breakfast? Honey Bunches of Oats cereal
  6. What is your middle name? Dawn (growing up I had 3 friends with the same middle name)
  7. What is your favourite cuisine? I love all kinds...on Sat. night I had Thai and it was awesome!
  8. What foods do you dislike? Olives...walking past that section at Superstore is punishment!
  9. What is your favourite chip flavour? It used to be dill pickle but recently I've switched to Doritos
  10. What is your favourite CD at the moment? Gwen Stefani - Love Angle Music Baby
  11. What kind of car do you drive? Mine is out of commission at the moment so I am borrowing my parents-in-law Honda Civic (very sweet of them to lend it!)
  12. Favourite Sandwich? Veggie with pineapple (must have pineapple!)
  13. What characteristics do you despise? Fakeness (I know that's not a word but you understand right?)
  14. Favourite item of clothing? Flipflops (I was mortified in Halifax this summer when I heard that I couldn't wear them out...thank goodness the rumour was not true)
  15. If you could go anywhere in the world on vacation where would you go? Costa Rica
  16. What colour is your bathroom? Very dark red like wine
  17. What colour pants are you wearing? Red
  18. Where would you retire to? Somewhere very warm!
  19. What was your most memorable birthday party? All the ones when I was little - It was so exciting to find out what your cake would look like and to spin the bottle to figure out whose present you would open
  20. Favourite time of day? Morning and after school
  21. Where were you born? Regina
  22. What's the last thing you ate? Crackers and cheese
  23. If you were a crayon what colour would you be? Lawn green
  24. Favourite flower? Wild flowers
  25. What fabric detergent do you use? It's from Costco, don't know what it's called
Believe it or not, that was only half of my email questionaire! I don't know how people can do the whole thing in one sitting. Better luck next time!

I just got back from a snowboarding trip to Kimberley and it was so much fun! Unfortunately I'm a little behind on technology and don't have a digital camera yet (I actually have to wait to get my pictures developed!). So here's a picture taken at Kimberley that I wish I took but I didn't (I got it from altavista and I promise it is Kimberley). When I finish my roll of film and get my OWN pictures developed I'll be sure to post a picture. Until then, enjoy this one!  Posted by Hello

A Day in the Life...

Telephone - RING! RING!
Girl answers - Hello?
Telephone - (long drawn-out delayed hesitation)
Girl hangs up quickly - CLICK!
I could repeat this scenario many times over to illustrate a typical day at my house. This is definitely a situation where I'm extremely annoyed with technology. With the new system that telemarketers have right now, they have the ability to call a bunch of people at once. When someone answers the phone, a person working with the telemarketing agency connects to your call. This new technology seems to be increasing the number of calls we get at our house. Now, if that was the extent of the problem, I wouldn't care as much because I can always just hang up when I hear the delay. However, the problem is that there are not only delays with telemarketing calls. There are also delays when people make international calls. This delay has caused us to hang up numerous times on Anders' brother who calls us from Suwon, South Korea. We can no longer rely on the hesitation. Now, we actually have to wait to hear the caller's voice and in the end we wind up talking to a telemarketer because we feel bad hanging up after they have already said "hello." Has anybody ever heard of a spam filter for telephones??

Give Kids A Chance

It seems that quite often in many classrooms, students who finish their work quickly get the opportunity to use the computer. What happens to all of the students who have trouble getting their assignments done early? Sometimes very limited computer time.
I think that giving students equal opportunity to use the computer in the classroom is vital. The world is becoming more and more technological and the better equipped our students are to enter this "real" world, the more productive their future might be.
Using the computer on a regular basis improves keyboarding skills and motivates students to learn. In addition, giving students the opportunity to finish their work on the computer might actually result in an assignment done early.
Teachers need to remember that although computer time may be seen as a reward, it is also an effective tool to help struggling students succeed!
